BIOGRAPHY
Susan Baker has created a large body of work during her
lifetime as an artist. Her wide ranging literary readings coupled with her
extensive travels to Europe have informed her art in fascinating ways. As
her husband, poet Keith Althaus observes, “each painting is part challenge
and discovery, and part tribute and memory.” She quotes from Proust,
“The real discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but
in having new eyes.”
Susan Baker attended the Rhode Island School of Design and spent her senior
year in Rome as part of the European Honors Program. From 1969-1970 she was
a Fellow at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Massachussetts. She
has received grants from the Massachusetts Foundation for the Arts, the Women’s
Studio Workshop, Rosendale, NY and from the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester,
NY. Her work has been enthusiastically exhibited in Boston and New York and
in her own gallery, The Susan Baker Memorial Museum
in North Truro on Cape Cod.
